A complete analysis of one business question

1. Define the question

Did US imports from China increase in August 2026 from July?

2. Hold the basis constant

Use US Census FT900 Exhibit 19: seasonally adjusted, Census basis, goods trade, USD billions.

3. Compare the result

Imports declined from $25.584B to $25.411B, about 0.7% month over month. US exports to China fell faster, widening the deficit by about 7.4%.

4. State the limit

A slight decline in the total does not establish lower demand for a product or that a business stopped buying. Product conclusions require consistent HS-level data and verified records.

This delivery example contains a reproducible monthly comparison, year-to-date change, interpretation limits and a drill-down path. Product- or buyer-level questions require separately authorized HS detail or record-level data with explicit coverage.

Distinguish three roles on the US import side

Goods origin

Check whether a field refers to origin, place of shipment or loading port; they are not interchangeable.

Receiving entity

A record may name an importer, warehouse or logistics business; verify its operating role.

Import use

Separate retail goods, manufacturing inputs and service parts so the research fits your business.

Group imported goods by use

Consumer goods

Review furniture, toys, apparel and footwear by material, use and channel rather than applying one market-share figure to all goods.

Industrial inputs

Match machinery, electronic components, plastics and metal parts against specifications and the recipient’s manufacturing activities.

Shipping context

Record loading/discharge ports, dates and company addresses separately; port changes alone do not establish a sourcing shift.
